English Societies

80

Whether you want to enjoy or analyse the literature of others, or write your own, the English department is proud to offer a range of societies which focus on engaging pupils with wider aspects of English.聽

Junior Literary Society

KS3 pupils will have the opportunity to explore a range of literary genres, enter external writing competitions and play English-themed games.

The Writer’s Block

This club offers the opportunity for junior pupils to create and share all forms of writing.

Run by Ms Stedman who was a professional writer for the BBC, this club helps writers to develop their material through creative activities and workshops, sharing their work for feedback.

Senior Literary Society

This society will feature student and staff talks about a variety of literary areas, often with a cross-curricular link. It is open to all from 4th Year-U6th and you do not have to study English to get involved!

English Extension

These are academic extension sessions to prepare pupils for studying English in Higher Education. Pupils study a range of literature through extracts and academic seminar-style discussion, exploring a particular topic such as 鈥榯he purpose of magic鈥 or 鈥榩sychological discord鈥, culminating in a written essay.

The department also arranges evenings designed to enhance pupils’ appreciation of the context surrounding set texts – recently we have enjoyed ‘Gatsby’ and ‘Streetcar’ themed sessions in which relevant history, texts and aspects of culture were considered. Along with other creative disciplines and the Humanities, we arrange symposiums to help pupils to appreciate cross-curricular links whilst exploring more deeply particular topics and themes – for example, The Medieval World on the Move or Tragedy.

English societies are open to anyone, not only those studying English, and we would love to see you there.
